Traveler Safety Tips

Please consider the following safety tips to ensure that your travel and stay are enjoyable.

Traveler Safety

  • Always make sure that someone at home knows your travel itinerary, the name of the hotel where you
will be staying and your cell phone number.
  • Place a copy of your travel itinerary inside your luggage.
  • The best luggage tag is one that hides your personal information.
  • Protect and maintain control of your driver’s license, passport, and boarding pass.
  • Luggage – maintain control and watch your luggage; especially at the curb side, ticket counter,
    x-ray machine and gate areas.
  • Keep medications in their original containers.
  • Please note, some airlines now charge a fee for checked baggage. Airline charges vary.

On the Plane

  • Count the seats/rows to the nearest emergency exits, in front and behind you.
  • Wear non-restrictive clothing made of natural fibers.
  • Wear low-healed shoes that are secure on your feet in the event of an evacuation.

Hotel Security

  • Maintain control of your luggage when checking in and out of your hotel
  • Make sure no one hears your name and room number while at the front desk
  • Call the desk to verify identity of room service, housekeeping, maintenance repair persons, etc.
  • Deposit valuables in the hotel safe
  • Never leave cash or other valuables in your room.
  • Use the door viewer to identify anyone requesting entry to your room.
  • Report any suspicious activity to hotel staff.
  • Keep your room key with you at all times.
  • Return your room key to the front desk or take it with you.
  • Familiarize yourself with the fire exit routes posted in your room.

Vehicle Safety

  • Place maps, travel brochures and valuables out of sight in the glove compartment or trunk.
  • Never leave wallets, credit cards, checkbooks and/or purses in the vehicle.
  • Always lock your vehicle and take the keys. Never hide a key on your vehicle.
  • Check the interior of your vehicle before getting in.
  • Park in well-lighted, busy areas.

Property Lost in a Taxi

  • Check the cab company name, your driver name and number when you enter a taxi and write it down.
  • Call the police if the cab has pulled away with your possessions inside.

Homeless / Displaced Persons

Like every major city in the world, Memphis has a homeless population. Most homeless people are harmless; however, some street people are chronic law violators who may infringe upon the rights of others. Demonstrate a combination of respect and caution around panhandlers and strangers.

Credit Card Loss

Keep a separate list of your credit cards and their numbers. Notify the police at once if your credit cards have been lost or stolen. If credit cards are not reported missing, they can be used. Don’t be lulled into not reporting the loss by someone who calls and asks where to mail your credit cards to.
